achievements

I have been on a performance high. I finished a book. saw two shows. delivered a few mixes. Re-organized & mass cleaned my room. Started dealing with repressed feelings...again. Well, now that I see it down in writing it doesn't seem so impressive, but still it made me feel good.

Here's the report:

Life of Pi - Yann Martel

Even though it came highly recommended to me, the high expectations did not disappoint. The well executed flow of the thoughts and experiences of Pi made this book quite a page turner. I was warned when I purchased it, that the beginning was a little hard to get through but that after the first 30 pages or so it really picks up; the well-meaning advice however did not apply to me. I loved the beginning and especially the end of this novel. I was literally laughing out loud in public places at certain points, which isn't that big of a deal when comparing it to yelling on the treadmill at LA Fitness while watching the World Cup.

One of many favorite quotes:

"What a terrible thing it is to botch a farewell. I am a person who believes in form, in the harmony of order. Where we can, we must give things meaningful shape....It's important in life to conclude things properly. Only then can you let go. Otherwise you are left with words you should have said but never did, and your heart is heavy with remorse."

oh Yann...you speak to my heart.

Black Kids

The venue was well run, no complaints. the crowd sucked, between being cursed out and my sister being burned my a Time-Travelers cigarette (not even kidding, he gave us his time and space travel business card for his contact information) I was over that party. It was nice to go to Miami and we met some friends down there but it didn't compare to my first visit to Vagabonds...I mean how many times does a girl get proposed to. ;) The music was a little scattered, between them playing a lot of new stuff and then playing their old stuff in a new way, I felt a little out of the loop. But once the oldies came on everyone started working together to make the night a success. Oh! and I got hit in the side of my head with a tambourine. But it all worked out because my friend caught it and gave it me and I got it signed by the band.

Sleigh Bells

It was a new venue for me, and it was probably the best part of the night (other than the perfect group of friends I happen to be with). From the wall art to the layout it was a hit. The crowd was better than the Black Kids crowd but not amazing. Even though we got there an hour later than planned, it was still too early because we had to 'sit' through two opening bands...the good thing is that both bands inspired me to take up drumming again...because if they can make it, so can I. The performance itself was pretty good. I had fun, but i agree with Johnathan when he said they should have had a DJ on stage or something else. It did feel lacking. Regardless, i did appreciate the unusual use of the stage. Discussing it later, I think Devin got it right...I'm getting too old for this stuff. (i'm 23 hahaha)

One more Book Review coming shortly...fingers crossed.

Cup Fever

Tuesday, Paraguay v. Japan

Regardless of the lack-luster performance from both teams, their unceasing energy and larger than life heart for the game was something to be admired and quite inspiring, at least to me.

(Spoiler Alert)

As the game pushed through the allotted 90-minutes with neither team yet to score, we went into Overtime. 15 minutes...nothing. Another 15....nothing. My stomach dropped every time Paraguay got control of the ball. I should explain that I wasn't exactly raring to go when i first heard of the match. Without much foreknowledge about either team I just sporadically decided to root for Paraguay simply due to my South American descent...little did I know how charmed I would be by the last standing Asian team. As you witness the teams slowly depleting energy and their legs start to service them just as anchors to a ship. Neither team running to get the ball before it goes off the field, Neither team quick to steal the ball away to gain control of the game....my heart became as heavy as their legs.

Long story short...and I do mean long...this game took me two different recordings, spanning two days, in three separate sittings to complete...

...Japan lost.

I fought back tears...I wish I was kidding about that.

Self-Truths

isn't it paralyzingly beautiful...

So I've been doing some "soul searching" these days and it's gotten me really excited! I've been realizing that I am sincerely happy and at peace with my current "status" (this is in regards to dating)
Disclaimer: I'm not projecting my values and/or timeline onto anyone else. To each his own :)
It's just been a time of self-discovery and I'm content that I've been doing it by myself and for myself...and you know what, I usually feel bad talking about myself this much, but this time...I don't care! Me Me Me Me…(what a narcissist!) haha.

So you may be wondering what elicited all this rambling about 'self-truth.' Well I noticed the other day something small yet profound about myself, as you all know I'm crazy about music, and I usually have strong opinions about what I choose to listen to and give my stamp of approval. So when I realized that I’ll fall in love with anything with an amazing beat 'I can set my heart to'...I'm done for it. Then I realized this isn't as big of a deal that I'm making it out to be but it spreads through other areas of my melodic choices and life.

As a therapist I play classical music for my patients and I usually just drown out the music because I hear it over and over all day. But I’ve been playing this one CD as of late (a Classical Mixtape) and I realized that the only songs I ‘drown out’ are songs that are composed predominantly with stringed instruments. It may be over played but my favorite classical song…maybe all time song, is Claire De Lune by Claude DeBussy. Obviously it’s been re-recorded with every possible combination of instruments but I love the original and simple piano recording. I love the deeper tones richer melodies pianos, organs, and drums produce.

Well, just thought I’d share. Do you have any recently discovered self-truths?
