Cup Fever
Tuesday, Paraguay v. Japan
Regardless of the lack-luster performance from both teams, their unceasing energy and larger than life heart for the game was something to be admired and quite inspiring, at least to me.
(Spoiler Alert)
As the game pushed through the allotted 90-minutes with neither team yet to score, we went into Overtime. 15 minutes...nothing. Another 15....nothing. My stomach dropped every time Paraguay got control of the ball. I should explain that I wasn't exactly raring to go when i first heard of the match. Without much foreknowledge about either team I just sporadically decided to root for Paraguay simply due to my South American descent...little did I know how charmed I would be by the last standing Asian team. As you witness the teams slowly depleting energy and their legs start to service them just as anchors to a ship. Neither team running to get the ball before it goes off the field, Neither team quick to steal the ball away to gain control of the game....my heart became as heavy as their legs.
Long story short...and I do mean long...this game took me two different recordings, spanning two days, in three separate sittings to complete...
...Japan lost.
I fought back tears...I wish I was kidding about that.
